Problems with your bite may increase bone damage and loss. You may be referred back to your general dentist for a bite guard. This is a removable device that fits over upper or lower teeth. The bite guard protects tooth surfaces and relaxes tense jaw muscles. In some cases, the bite may need to be adjusted so that the teeth meet properly and function better. This may be done by either your periodontist or general dentist.
